Lifecycle of a Domain
A domain follows a specific lifecycle, typically as outlined below:
1. AddPeriod:
The first 5 days after domain registration fall under this period. During this time, the registrant can delete the domain and request a refund or register a different domain if needed. For example, if there is a spelling mistake, this can be a solution. However, this process depends on the registry and registrar—not all registrars or registries offer this feature. Some registrars charge a small fee of $1 to $3 for this process.
2. Registered:
A gTLD domain can generally be registered for a period ranging from 1 year to a maximum of 10 years. As long as it is renewed, it can be used without any restrictions. However, if there are copyright issues, DMCA complaints, or other abuse concerns, the registrar or registry may suspend or seize the domain.
3. Renew Grace Period:
If the domain expires, it enters a grace period that can last up to 45 days, though this may vary by registrar (e.g., 15 days, 30 days, or 42 days). Some TLDs do not have a grace period.
During this time, the domain can be easily renewed by paying the regular renewal fee. However, if renewed after expiration, the domain may remain offline for up to 24 hours.
4. Redemption Period:
If the domain is not renewed during the grace period, it moves into the redemption period. At this stage, the domain can still be recovered, but it requires a restore instead of a regular renewal.
The restoration fee is usually 4 to 10 times the standard renewal fee, depending on the registrar. This phase lasts for 45 days. However, if there are backorders, some registrars may transfer the domain to another party even before the redemption period begins.
5. Pending Delete Period:
If the domain is not restored during the redemption period, it enters the Pending Delete phase. This phase lasts 5 days, during which the domain cannot be renewed or restored.
After these 5 days, the domain becomes available for new registration. However, if there is a backorder, someone else may register it immediately upon release. In some cases, registries may reserve specific domains.
Final Thoughts:
A domain owner has a chance to reclaim their domain until the end of the grace period. After that, recovery may not be possible.
If your domain is valuable, it is highly recommended to renew it before it expires to avoid losing ownership due to the domain lifecycle.
